Sometimes my little one gets confused with the colors..is there any ways in which I can still teach them effectively?
We do a lot of painting We do ask which color is this and that-dresses/cars etc
Is it an issue because I teach them all at one go? Should I have sticked to one color at a time??
I still have time and I’m not pressuring, but I want to know if there is something different or more interesting in the Way I make her learn..
Editted to add - she is able to match and sort colors but when i ask her name it, she lands up on saying random color name ..
Thank you 😊
Bear with me as I am going to get a bit technical and boring here :) :) The matching skills we are talking about is the visual part of the brain which is pretty straight forward. You show something to a child, it is absorbed through their eyes and is registered in the visual cortext of their brain. Simple and Job done! Visual memory is quite strong and that is why we can many a time recognize faces but not remember their names :)
Next comes the part of associating a word which is the word "red" to an "image" they have seen and stored in visual cortex. This word storage happens in the "receptive language" part of the brain called Wernicke's area. So, when you say this is "red" colour by showing an image, it's like adding a DB table entry for the "image" with the word "red". She stores it in multiple parts of her brain and creates a link between them.
Now the QUERYing part -
You will really have to strengthen the "receptive speech" part of her brain by saying "Give me red", "Show me red" etc with pictures which involves no speech or answering.
Once this is mastered thoroughly, you can activate the expressive speech part by asking the question "What colour is this?". At this point, there will be no confusion in her brain to obtain the data and convert it to a word / speech.
