How to teach vowels sounds

I keep getting a lot of questions from parents, especially that of infants and toddlers about introducing basic concepts like vocabulary, colours, body parts etc to their children. There alwasy seems to be a confusion on what to teach first and how to progress further.

Parents tend to end up teaching alphabet, numbers etc when there are lot more that an infant can learn before that.

Some of the parents seem to have introduced concepts way before the child was actually ready to learn those concepts. This creates issues like - child learning things incorrectly or getting confused.

Here is a list of things I would introduce to a baby in the following hierarchy:

  1. Vocabulary - Words, Words, Lot of words!

  2. Body Parts

  3. Household items / Things in the house

  4. Vegetables

  5. Fruits

  6. Animals

  7. Birds

  8. Flowers

  9. Vehicles

  10. Colours

  11. Puzzles - Peg, Inset, Jigsaw

  12. Stacking

  13. Sorting

  14. Seriation

  15. Patterns / Visual Discrimination

  16. Numbers

  17. Alphabet

  18. Pattern Sequences

  19. Prepositions / Spatial reasoning

  20. Counting

  21. Phonics / Reading
